Starbucks Cafes Across India

DESIGN THINKING

What?

A nature inspired exploration of Starbucks’ Bean to Cup journey. An entirely sustainable artwork made for Starbucks’ first store in the Nagpur (Maharashtra), this artwork captures the essence and the rich heritage of the Indian coffee history.
Size: 3 feet (H) x 9.5 feet (W) x 1 foot (D)
Location: Dharampeth, Nagpur

Why?

Following the brief mentioned by the client of following the “Bean to Cup” journey, we ideated the art around using completely natural materials. A rich hand-embroidered textile art replicating the Starbucks coffee estates in Coorg & Chickmaglur; the birth place of coffee in India, forms the base of the artwork.

Exploring Banana Fibre Paper

Various papers such as Banana Fibre paper; a paper made from banana fibre made by extracting the stumps of cut banana plants papers, Lokta paper; made from the fibrous inner bark of evergreen shrubs, Rice paper; a pulp paper made from rice starch, were used in making a web of coffee botanicals which was then overlaid on the rich textile art. We collaborated with a Paper Artist to make these intricate flowers, leaves and coffee berries and even stained the paper in a coffee concoction to further enhance the artwork.

Process

Taking inspiration from the finest arabica coffee beans used by Starbucks, this handcrafted conglomeration of coffee botanicals brings alive the coffee story along with celebrating handmade Indian art. While creating this artwork our focus was only on sustainability, craft and artisans which led to collaborative efforts with the best karigars and paper craft artists in India.
